On 25th September, Sight for Surrey held its Showcase Event at The Lightbox in Woking to launch our new five-year strategy and celebrate the range of services that we offer as a multi-sensory charity.

The Showcase was a stimulating day of talks, seminars, activities and inspiration for all around the themes of sport and employment.

The day began with introductions from Cecilia Power, the Sight for Surrey Chairman, and Mel Few, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care. Sight for Surrey CEO Bob Hughes shared about the charity’s renewed contract to support the Deaf and hard of hearing in Surrey and also launched the organisation’s new five-year strategy.

Our new Employment Scheme was launched, with the help of The Rt Hon. Penny Mordaunt MP, Minister of State for disabled people. This scheme is aimed at businesses and external partners who are interested in how they can help people with sight or hearing impairments into work with our support. The Employability Scheme will provide information on recruitment strategies, work adjustments and public grants with the end goal of offering tangible work-related opportunities. We were therefore pleased to welcome local business people to the Showcase and offer them the chance to find out more about this new and exciting opportunity.

Other highlights of the day included a presentation on the topic of “Sports for All” from James Clarke, a deafblind runner who has won over 100 medals in 8 years, as well as Robin Christopherson MBE who shared about the importance of accessibility when it comes to technology and websites.

We also had activity sessions led by experienced professionals Terry James and RAD (The Royal Association for Deaf People), demonstrations of specialist equipment, free legal advice, and the opportunity to connect with organisations such as Guide Dogs and VIDA Training.

Several local schools attended the Showcase and had the opportunity to take part in sports activities including static cycling, rowing and guided running, as well as an array of arts and craft activities.

Thank you to those who attended the Showcase – we hope you enjoyed it!
