Tanya was born three months prematurely which caused her to be blind from birth. Living in Epsom, she was fortunate to have a charity nearby who were able to help her from as young as six years old, when she was taught Braille.
Since then, Sight for Surrey – based in Fetcham but supporting people county wide, who are blind, Deaf, Hard of Hearing, have a visual impairment, or combined sight and hearing loss – has supported Tanya in a number of ways. It has provided mobility training to Tanya which has enabled her to develop the skills she needs to travel to London, and routes closer to home, independently and with confidence.
In an ever-changing technological world, Tanya has kept up to date, with the support of Sight for Surrey’s IT trainer, who has installed applications onto her computer, which improve email communication and read out website pages. She says: “I love being able to email friends and family in a straightforward fashion. Sight for Surrey provides a wonderful and helpful service. All the staff are patient and thoughtful, and I am so grateful for all the help they have given me to ensure I can live life the way I want.”
And now the charity benefits too as Tanya often volunteers for us now at our headquarters where she helps us in a number of ways – and where she is partial to having a nice cup of strong tea made for her!
