Charlie, 26, is a former soldier with the British Army’s 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment.
He was recently diagnosed with Stargadt’s Disease, a ‘younger person’s macular degeneration’. This means Charlie is losing his central vision and is already no longer allowed to drive. There is currently no treatment for Stargadt’s and Charlie’s vision will only deteriorate over time.
Charlie has recently completed a Personal Development, Confidence Building and Mentoring programme with Sight for Surrey. He says: “I have been so impressed with Sight for Surrey’s support. While I am still coming to terms with my diagnosis and what it means for the future, it has been great to have the charity’s input and regular contact.
“The mentoring aspect of the Employment Programme has been really beneficial to me and I’m already considering different career options, taking my vision impairment into consideration.”
